Research:

The goal for the project was the create a unique product with the introduction of glass printing technology. The majority of the printed glass market is for decoration meaning writing on such boards would not be legible, therefor presenting the Calyx brand with a unique challenge of creating prints that are both visually appealing and legible.

Creating a Recipe:

Many art pieces have defined lines or patterns that make writing on them difficult. However, modern art encompasses various styles, some of which enable legible writing due to their minimalist nature. Take, for example, Version A of this beautiful painting. It uses turquoise, black, and white brush strokes to tell a dramatic story. By blurring the painting in Version B, the text becomes more legible. Fine lines and high contrast reduce legibility, while subtle, gradual changes increase it. In version C, we optimized the colors from Version B for a writing surface. Lighter colors were prioritized for the top, where we write the most, while darker tones were used at the bottom, where we write the least. This resulted in a stunning blend of colors that make a statement while still functioning as a marker board.

Replicating the Recipe:

Now that I found a recipe, I had to come up with different options for various preferences and colors. So, I decided to look beyond just art and explore what I could find. It turns out gradients are all around us - from nature, animals, buildings, and even ourselves. By having inspiration, we created a story for each unique Ombria. In total, we created 40 standard Ombria with a range of neutrals and vibrant colors.
